Treatment for Allergies

Allergy can be relieved by various allergy treatments in the market. A doctor may prescribe suitable treatment or medication based on the type of allergy and the severity of the attack.

Some allergy patients may get prescription allergy treatment that has combination medicines with it. It is said that combination allergy treatment is best to achieve fast and efficient relief.

The most popular and effective allergy treatments are corticosteroid, decongestants, mast cell stabilizers, antihistamines and leukotriene modifiers. These allergy medications have their own unique way of treating allergy symptoms.

  • Corticosteroids – This allergy treatment is known for reducing inflammation. It is proven effective as allergy treatment since it also prevents irritations of the skin, nose, and eyes. Corticosteroid comes in nasal sprays, skin creams, oral pills and eye drops. Corticosteroid skin creams are used to alleviate skin irritation especially during the diagnosis phase and on un-pricked skin during skin test.
  • Decongestants – One of the most common allergy symptoms is the obstruction in the sinuses and nose. Decongestants help alleviate this symptom, as well as allergic conjunctivitis in the eyes which usually follows nasal obstruction. Decongestants come in nasal sprays, pills and eye drops.
  • Mast cell stabilizers – are allergy treatments that reduce the production of histamine. They are used as treatment for hay fever and allergic conjunctivitis, and they come in nasal sprays and eye drops.
  • Antihistamines – are allergy treatments that neutralize histamine. This treatment contains a chemical substance which is released by the body’s immune system when allergens are identified. Histamine causes irritation of the eyes, nose and skin. Antihistamines come in nasal sprays, pills and eye drops.
  • Leukotriene modifiers – reduces the leukotriene activity in the body. Leukotriene is another substance [like histamine] which is released by the immune system when allergens attack. Leukotriene modifiers help alleviate allergic asthma and hay fever. This type of allergy treatment does not have severe side-effects. Some patients were reported to have headaches when treated with leukotriene modifiers, and it is probably the most serious side-effect of this treatment.
