Allergy Symptoms

Allergy occurs when a person’s immune system overreacts to certain factors such as allergens. Exposure to these certain factors can lead to allergy symptoms.

Allergy symptoms can be difficult to cope with if not attended to immediately. Some allergy symptoms are not as severe as others, but they can be bothersome and may interrupt your normal daily routine.

Some people develop allergy symptoms when exposed to allergens, while some people don’t. It is important to consult a doctor if you are experiencing allergic reactions to certain types of food, for example.

Most Common Allergy Symptoms

Allergens can either be airborne, ingested or come into contact with the skin. The allergy symptoms can either be seen on the surface of the skin or felt such as itching or having difficulty breathing.

  • Skin rashes
  • Itchy skin
  • Abdominal cramps/pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Breathing problems
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Congestion
  • Diarrhea
  • Mental confusion or disorientation

What to do and how to cope with allergy symptoms

The first thing that every person should do at the onset of allergy symptoms is to seek medical help. Taking over-the-counter medications such as topical creams or taking medicated pills might not alleviate the problem at all. Some medicines may even cause fatal results especially when the person is also allergic to certain types of pills or medicines.

It is important to take the allergy symptoms seriously upon the onset rather than thinking of it as a little problem that can go away overnight. Don’t take your chances with allergy symptoms because most of the time, they do not go away just like that.

There are, however, a few precautionary things that you can do while at home.

  • If you are allergic to pets or animal hair, make sure that you take your pet outside or away from where to sleep and stay most of the time. If you can, make sure that the animal stays in a different area in and around your house to prevent allergy attacks.
  • If you are allergic to certain foods like dairy, seafood, nuts and grains, make sure that you eat the right types of food. Avoid these foods when you eat out as well, and make sure your family and friends know that you are avoiding these foods for health reasons.
  • You may take vitamin C as part of your health regimen every day. Ask your doctor about vitamin C and antihistamine that can help you fight allergy each day.
